Drutup Yeshe introduced Buddhism in the Dolpo valley. Many years ago he came to Dolpo and came across a wild people whose supreme God was a 'fierce mountain spirit'. Crystal mountain is to the west of Shey monastery. It is a very strange mountain indeed. Its contorted cliffs are laced with quartz and embedded with a rich variety of marine fossils. Trip Introduction

Choosing your best trekking destination in Nepal is not an easy task. Even more difficult while there are so many options. From the traveler's personal experience, trekking to upper Dolpo is the best way to explore the isolated natural beauty of Nepal. Even though the country seems to be small, you will find more than 100 trekking and hiking trips in Nepal. Among them, this one can be the best fit for you if you are willing to get a significant insight into isolating places in Nepal.

General information about Dolpo:

Dolpo lies in the Western Part of Nepal. One of the most remote and hard-to-reach places in the Country. While the Lower Part (known as the Lower Dolpo) is relatively accessible then the upper Dolpo.

Upper Dolpo Trek requires some extra information and needs to be planned in the logistics way before heading to the area. The cost of a permit to the region is relatively high in comparison to other regions. Travelers must pay USD 50 per day, for a minimum of 10 days trip to Upper Dolpo.

About Dolpo

It's quite rare to get porter services in the area, so travelers might need to carry the necessary stuff by themselves. The necessary stuff includes food and types of equipment including tents e.t.c. So it's mandatory to hire an experienced guide while trekking to this region.

There are 5000+ meter passes to cross, and several nights have to be spent above 3500 meters. However, trekking in Upper Dolpo is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the adventure seeker, and with the right preparations, the rewards are much greater than the struggles.

Dolpo is the most beautiful and least developed district of Nepal. So, travelers have rarely visited this area because of the high passes trail. The trekking trail of the Upper Dolpo passes through beautiful valleys, local settlements, high mountains and alpine green forest of pines, Rhododendrons, Oaks, etc with the green lush vegetation.

What can be expected...???

The main highlights of the trek are a spectacular landscape, mesmerizing Shey Phoksundo lake, eye-pleasing villages of Ringmo and the ancient centuries-old monasteries. Phoksundo is the deepest lake of Nepal with its 145m depth according to a survey by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. Trekkers can explore the centuries-old Buddhist monasteries (which is known as Shey Gompa), wildlife during the trekking trail, pristine lake on the way, soaring peaks and people’s lifestyle of a least developed region is also another attraction of the trek.

Here is a holy mountain called “Crystal Mountain” that is why each year hundreds of pilgrims’ travelers visit the upper Dolpo region and make a circuit of the mountain. The people of this region mostly speak Tibetan languages as the original Tibetan people have been settled in upper Dolpo from the last many years. Rarely some people can understand the Nepali language.

The Trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj about 45 minutes and the next morning flight ends at Jhupal 35 minutes. The Upper Dolpo trek is better to do in the summer and monsoon season but Winter seasons are avoided for this trek because of the heavy snowfall.

When is the Best season for Trekking in Dolpo Region?

Winter

December to February are the coldest months to trek, with the shortest days and the fewest people. There is often a lot of snow on the ground, especially above Dolpo and getting to Destination can sometimes be very difficult or impossible. Many of the higher villages are abandoned for the winter, so tents may be your best bet.

Spring

March, April, and May are some of the busier months and for good reason. The days are getting warmer, the weather is mostly stable and the climbing season is in full swing. It really is an amazing sight from several viewpoints. In the lower valleys, the flowers are blooming on the Rhododendrons and the terraced fields turn green with new shoots of vegetables.

Summer

From June to August the summer monsoons bring rain and snow. There are fewer visitors during these months, although some of the most beautiful, warm, blue-sky days occur now. Usually, by the afternoon, there is a rainstorm or snow higher up.

Autumn

This is the most popular time to visit the Annapurna Area. September through November is a time of steady weather patterns, less precipitation, and cleaner air. The lodges are full and everyone is friendly. If you enjoy meeting new friends, want the best chance for great weather and don’t mind an empty, this is the best trekking season.
